Great Podcasts to check out!

Listen to Podcasts, insteasd of music, and maybe you will learn something!

Podcasts are a thing of the more recent times, the term actually invented in 2004.

So what is a podcast?

A podcast is an episodic series of digital audio or video files which a user can download and listen to. It is often available for subscription, so that new episodes are automatically downloaded via web syndication to the user’s own local computer, mobile application, or portable media player.

The word arose as a portmanteau of “iPod” (a brand of media player) and “broadcast“. Thus, the files distributed are in audio format, but may sometimes include other file formats such as PDF or ePub. Videos which are shared following a podcast model are called video podcasts or vodcasts.

The distributor of a podcast maintains a central list of the files on a server as a web feed that can be accessed through the Internet. The listener or viewer uses special client application software on a computer or media player, known as a podcatcher, which accesses this web feed, checks it for updates, and downloads any new files in the series. This process can be automated so that new files are downloaded automatically, which may seem to the user as though new episodes are broadcast or “pushed” to them. Files are stored locally on the user’s device, ready for offline use. There are many different mobile applications available for people to use to subscribe and listen to podcasts. Many of these applications allow users to download podcasts or stream them on demand as an alternative to downloading. Many podcast players (apps as well as dedicated devices) allow listeners to skip around the podcast and control the playback speed.

Some have labeled podcasting as a converged medium bringing together audio, the web, and portable media players, as well as a disruptive technology that has caused some people in the radio business to reconsider established practices and preconceptions about audiences, consumption, production, and distribution. Podcasts are usually free of charge to listeners and can often be created for little to no cost, which sets them apart from the traditional model of “gate-kept” media and production tools. Podcast creators can monetize their podcasts by allowing companies to purchase ad time, as well as via sites such a Patreon, which provides special extras and content to listeners for a fee. It is very much a horizontal media form: producers are consumers, consumers may become producers, and both can engage in conversations with each other.

Here is a list of podcasts that I currently listen too, some on a weekly basis, and others depending on when they release new shows.  You can check them out by clicking on the photos and the podcast itself will give you a description. These are mostly on the Google Play store, but you can find most of these in iTunes as well.

Will and Mango have lots of questions. Will we ever be able to live without sleep? How do rats keep outsmarting humans? Which personality tests should I believe in? And what is, definitively, the strangest place worth visiting in the US? (Many important historians are counting on them to figure it out!) In each episode, these Part-Time Geniuses dive headfirst into a seemingly ridiculous topic, collecting memorable facts and uncovering secret histories in pursuit of genuine answers. Our hosts have no intention of connecting the dots alone. Listeners are welcome to pull up a chair and show off their smarts in lively quiz segments. And Will and Mango will be tapping some of their favorite brains-- scientists, comedians and authors, for help along the way. Tune in each week to learn whether you should be washing your bananas (you should), whether freezing your body is a better value than freezing just your head (it isn't), and what James Bond has to do with tax laws (everything!) in this podcast from HowStuffWorks.

Favorite Music

Music is always a passion to almost everyone nowadays.  I listen to everything from Heavy Metal to Hip-Hop to Pop to Folk Music, everything except for Country music.  When most people sit back and like to listen to Country music for comfort, it just makes me angry.  Then again, Heavy Metal music calms me down.

Within the past few years I purged my music library to get rid of a lot of negative music.  My music library only consisted of Christian artists.  Within the past year or two, I have become more open again and have been exploring some of the secular music, and when I mean secular I mean bands that do not consider themselves a Christian Band.  The swearing in music no longer bothers me, as long as it is used in context to express meaning to something and not just swearing for the fun of it.   Also, as long as the lyrics aren’t being completely negative, talking about using drugs, sleeping with women, etc. then I am up for checking out new music.  So if you are in a band and not listed on my list below, I am willing to check out your music!

I also am a fan of buying music.  No illegal downloading here.  Yes, I do have a Google Play account, but I still buy CD’s and T-Shirts of all of my favorite bands!  You can’t say you like an artist if you just stream there music for $10 a month on whatever streaming service you use, because that supports the band very little.

Below is a list of my favorite bands in each of my “main” genres.  You can click on their photo to check out their Websites.  All photos are copyright to the band and/or their photographers.

Rock – Disciple

Disciple was one of the first Christian band I listened too, this started back in 2007.  There music has helped me through some rough times and I still love their music today.  I respect what Kevin Young (lead singer) has done with the band over the course of 25+ years spreading the good word of Jesus. I have seen lots of people accept Jesus through his sermons, well not sermons but mid set speech.  Kevin, you happen to read this, I just want to say that you have been playing longer than most of your fans have been alive (joke intended).

Metal – Demon Hunter

Demon Hunter was the first metalcore band CD I bought back in 2008.  That CD was Storm the gates of Hell.  Even though they do not tour much anymore, I try to see them when I can and it seems that they are always swinging by my area of PA.

Metal (new) – Fit For A King

One day when Demon Hunter calls it quits (I hope no time soon), Fit For A King will overtake them as my number 1 Metal band.  I actually found out about them most recently, within the past few years.  Love the message they present in their music and what they stand for.

Hip-Hip – Thi’sl

Thi’sl, just check out his music.  This guy has been through so much in his life, I respect this guy and love what he is doing in his city, and around the world.  I know some of his story; I will not share it because I do not want to get anything wrong.  His lyrics are real and he spreads the message well.

Female Fronted Rock & Metal – The Letter Black

I have been a long time fan of The Letter Black since their original band name Breaking the Slience and their newest CD just knocked it out of the park with making them my #1 female front rock & metal band.  Just check them out!

Learn about Brian

Brian Meyers Jr. is the owner and currently the solo author of B-My’s and B-My’s Blog.  He is a Christian, Husband, Dad to 1 son and 2 pups, loves beer and Squirrels, is a Gardener, Mechanical Engineer, and an Advocare Advisor.

And that is the short version.

So now the sorta long version.

I, Brian, was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1989, graduated from Greater Johnstown High School in 2007, then from University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in 2011 with a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree.  Moved to York, Pennsylvania in 2012 for work and have lived here ever since.

I am a Christian and a follower of Christ, attend church regularly, and read my Bible daily.  I post up daily Bible verses that can be seen on my Instagram and Twitter.

I am a Husband to my wife Kayla; we were married in July of 2013.  We currently have 1 son, Wyatt (born in February 2017), and two dogs Ellie and Hannah.  Ellie is a Black Lab & German Shepherd Mix and we got her in 2012.  Hannah is a Border Collie mix that we rescued as a puppy from Homeward Bound Animal Rescue who rescued her from a high kill shelter.

I am an avid beer lover. and will try any beer at least once.  I am a fan of dark beers and wheat beers.  I will not drink any beers that have the word Lite in it.  I will post up what I am drinking on Instragram, hoping that one day I can get free beer from one of those companies.

I am a huge fan of squirrels, I have squirrels throughout my house.  I mean, how can you not see a squirrel and yell SQUIRREL!

I love to garden, growing stuff every year.  Anything from Squash and Zucchini to the hottest pepper in the world, the Carolina Reaper.

I am a Mechanical Engineer for a company called EMKA Inc.

My wife and I are also an Advocare Advisors, which you will see posts about on my Health Blog.

I also have an extremely rare disease called Synovial Chondromatosis, which can also be found on my health blog as well as my old blog.

I started B-My’s as a salsa company, called B-My’s Homemade, then branched out to designing items and now blogging.  More information can be found in the About section.

I will post up something new about myself every so often.  All can be found under the category Learn about Brian.
